Assistive Technology Training
Assistive technology training for visually impaired consumers. Time permitting, training may include (but is not limited to) any of the following skills as requested by counselor and client: ***Screen access software (JAWS, Window-Eyes, MAGic, ZoomText) ***Word Processing with MS Word ***Email with MS Outlook ***Internet Access with Internet Explorer or Firefox ***OCR (scanning) with Open Book, Kurzweil 1000, SARA, Eye-Pal, or ZoomTwix. ***Using a digital book player (Victor Reader Stream, Plextalk Pocket, BookSense) ***Using a Note Taker (BrailleNote, BrailleSense, VoiceNote, VoiceSense) ***Using Sendero GPS with a BrailleNote, BrailleSense, or computer ***Trekker Breeze ***Braille embossing with Duxbury ***Using a refreshable braille display (Focus, Brailliant, and others) ***All training sessions are recorded and saved on the client's computer and/or digital player. He or she can then listen to the recorded sessions to reinforce the learned skills.

Since 1989, we have provided technology products and services to visually impaired consumers in Southern California. We provide system integration, product installation, customized configuration services and technology training. Our products and services include notetakers (BrailleNote, BrailleSense, PAC Mate); digital book players/recorders (Victor Reader Stream, BookSense, Plextalk); Reading Systems with Scanners or cameras (SARA CE, Open Book, and Kurzweil 1000); Global Positioning Systems (Sendero GPS and Trekker Breeze); Refreshable Braille Displays (Focus and Brailliant); Screen Access Software (JAWS and Window-Eyes); Braille Embossers; Duxbury Software; and Screen Magnification Software (MAGic , ZoomText and Humanware video magnifiers). We configure computers to our clients’ exact specifications. Other products are available upon request.Our primary concern is that visually impaired consumers are able to use our products effectively to succeed in school, the workplace, and independent living. We have written training materials which we provide in addition to the manufacturers’ materials. Sweetman Systems documentation is available as audio, electronic files, braille, and large print.Robert Sweetman, who is blind himself, graduated from Stanford University with Honors, received a J.D. from UC Davis, and practiced law for 17 years. He relied on the assistive technology which we now provide. More recently, he earned a Master’s Degree in Assistive Technology with Honors from Cal State Northridge. Sue Sweetman has a teaching credential from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and enjoys applying Cal Poly’s Philosophy of “learn by doing” with our clients as we encourage them to master the technology that best meets their needs.
